Click to expand.First of all, make sure you save your original config! Make a 'COD4' file in 'My Documents'. Mine is 'DeadShot')-configmp Drag the existing (original config) that is already in the folder to your newly created 'COD4' folder in 'My Documents'. Warning: If you DO NOT SAVE your original configmp and the new one turns out to be harmful, unuseable, or just not what you expected, you will not have a backup plan.
Another quite easy way to fix crashing, is to look in game folder for: setup.exe, settings.exe, config.exe or some.ini file. If you do not see any exe files, try with.ini files (settings.ini config.ini etc.) and there, change resolution to lowest (800x600 for example).
